Shipping Wheels

If you’ve ever wondered how to safely pack wheels for shipping I recently came up with this approach.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- I purchased 1″ Foam Pipe Insulation from the local hardware store. It took about 26 Feet total for the job. Around $15.00 worth should do it.
- I got two perfectly sized boxes for 15×7″ wheels at Pier 1 Imports. I spotted the employee there a few bucks for running in the back and grabbing them for me.
- Packing tape of course.
I started by wrapping the front and rear lips of the wheel with insulation. Wrap it all the way around and trim off excess. I had an extra pair of hands to help me hold the insulation on while I secured it in place with packing tape.
Once both sides are secured, I cut a couple strips of foam for the base of the box to cushion the wheel. I taped them in so they won’t move.
Then I made 6″ long bumpers and taped them vertically about half-way across each of the 4 sides of the box as seen surrounding the wheel in this picture. I also placed a piece of foam across the center of the wheel to protect the top face. I zip tied it just snug through the lug holes. I checked for any loose play and everything was nice and snug. I sealed them up and they’re ready to go!

Great idea! I will pass this on to a guy that refinished rims and needs a better solution, especially for nation wide shipping.
