The “Box of Parts”

Posted on 11 November 2008 by Chris

We’ve all probably looked at or read about a car for sale that came with a “Box of Parts”… Well, When I bought my 1968 Porsche 912 the seller said he’d like me to meet him at his warehouse because this is where he “had some extra parts”. What I didn’t realize is that he was a 2nd generation Porschefile/Packrat and the majority of the cars his family owned were 356′s, 912′s and early 911′s. All of which they maintained, worked on, hot-rodded and so on.

We pulled into the warehouse which to my surprise was brand new. This kind of gave me the idea that the parts he mentioned would be a few odds and ends. Was I wrong. He and his family just built the new warehouse and moved all of their belongings from a previous storage unit to this one. The walls were lined with boxes which were labeled. The majority started with “Porsche….” . There were early 4 cylinder engine cases, pistons, cylinders, valves, rockers, rocker assemblies, cams, on and on. There were interior parts and pieces, a few body panels, wheels, etc. It was like heaven.

The catch- There was a guy who bought another car and engine from Jim (the seller) not long before me. This guy had dibs on all the parts. Jim was kind enough to throw a bunch of items in a box for me. I got pushrod tubes, fuel pumps, valves, vintage timing light and electronic tune-up kit, coco mats, and some other goodies.

A couple day’s ago Dave’s fuel pump had a drip and we exchanged the housing with one that I had in the Box of Parts. It got me wondering what else I had in there…

This morning I was going through some of the parts and realized that he gave me a vintage and period correct Perma Tune system. I called Lonnie at Permatune and gave him the Serial Number. He said this is pretty rare, very early and should probably work as they were built very well. I’m not sure if I’ll set up my car with it. But It’s always fun to find treasures like these… Here are some pics.

And here are some pictures of the boxes of parts. Seatbelts, pushrods and a blaupunkt radio.
