The Audi Coupe Quattro

Posted on 21 November 2008 by Chris

Whenever anyone asks me the question “What’s the best car you’ve ever owned” I never give a reply without including the Audi Coupe Quattro.

I bought my 1990 Coupe Quattro with around 135,000 miles on it. It was a 2 owner car (me being the 3rd) which the 2nd owner bought in 1993 and owned for the majority of the cars life. Prior to purchase, the seller brought me into his den which was full of German car memorabilia and told me story after story of living in Germany with the US Military and driving rare Porsche and Audi cars. He lived there in the 80′s and 90′s when RS2′s and UR Quattros roamed the Autobahn. There were remnants all over of life in Germany. He even had a poster on his wall in his den which he said was the first 944 Turbo to enter the US. A car which he had owned (the actual car in the Poster).

I ended up buying the car on site. He included with the sale a box of rare OEM/New parts. Posters, Window Sticker, Sales Brochures among other things. Although it had  a bit of a stumble under accelleration, I knew the common injector problems with the original Hitachi injectors could be the culprit. I immediately ordered the 034 Motorsport Injector Kit which was an easy install and well worth it. The kit basically bolted right in and made a HUGE difference in drivability, MPG and performance. I noticed better and more steady throttle response. My electronic MPG computer was throwing out numbers like 33mpg after the install (it was around 26mpg before the upgrade). I could not believe it. This was the best upgrade I had ever done to a car.

I drove the car nearly 10,000 miles in about 4 months. All of the miles were thru winter driving with Blizzak snow tires on. I travelled through: Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Oregon. I began finding myself on the windiest mountain roads. I took corners looking through the sidewindows as I drift through the snowy turns, one after another. The car never missed a beat and could instill over-confidence in an unsuspecting driver. I fit my snowboard bag, my photographers snowboard bag/gear as well as misc. bags in the rear fold down cargo area with ease for the long journey. The car has so much room it was perfect for travelling with all of our gear. The doors are situated to open with easy access to the rear seats for passengers. It hardly feels like you’re in a coupe. At one point I hauled a friend, his wife, my photographer, myself and all of our gear up Mt Bachelor, Oregon from Bend with no complaints. This was done in 8 inches of fresh powder!

Some Goodies The Car Came With

The Interior Has Recaro Heated Sport Seats with 3 Way Memory And My Favorite Steering Wheel Of All, The Audi RS2 Wheel. (The steering wheel was an add-on). 1990 was pre-airbag so swapping the steering wheel is fairly simple.

The Roomy Rear Seat With 60/40 Split Fold

All in all, this was one of the best cars for the money I have ever owned. It was safe, solid and well balanced. It was a like a snowmobile and felt like it could go through any amount of bad weather driving you’d give it. The car has a locking push-button differential! The heated seats were awesome. The inline 5 cylinder engine was one of Audi’s finest ever. You can find these cars for anywhere in the $2500-$7500 price range. Watch for powersteering issues, make sure the Timing Belt’s been changed and use the general car buying tips to find a nice one.

I sold this car a couple years ago. A friend now has it and he had an original, low mileage Audi S2 motor shipped over from Europe for it. I’ll check in with him to see if he can add to the story…
