Solex PII-4 Carb Revival

My good friend Dave was just about fed up with the inconsistent idle, backfiring, stalling & pronounced hesitation from his 40+ year old original Solex carbs on daily driven 1968, 912. After spending close to $900 on a pair of inefective rebuilds he was pointed towards 356 Carburetor Rescue in Arizona by his nephew, the all knowledgable Pete. Upon reading through their website and a couple of phone conversations, Dave decided they were the best choice for solutions to his stress & Solex problems. John, Candace & Jim @ Carb Rescue were kind and courteous and extremely detailed in their service and rebuild procedure. Not to mention offering great tech support before, during and after the sale. Dave began the process of saving his nickles and working out the details down to the color in the cad plating of nuts and bolts to the point where he was ready to order.

The Carbs couldn’t have arrived at a better time. The Rolex 24 at Daytona was just around the corner and how great it was going be to showing up in a smooth idling 912 to the Porsche Paddock!

The installation went very well, 3 hours start to finish for an experienced mechanic,,,, but Dave & Chris managed to cut that all the way down to a solid 5.5 hrs. A higher idle was tolerated for a few days till just before the Daytona excursion, and now it’s as sweet as sweet can be and still going to get better when the long sought for 022 Bosch distributor shows up in another couple of weeks……..

Here Dave and I set up shop. The Volkswagen is used for housing air cleaners and other various parts for the project.

I don’t care how old you are when you’ve waited for that special part for your car it’s like being a kid at Christmas when it finally arrives. And when it saves you fuel dollars it’s even better!

The folks at 356 Carburetor Rescue even found some nice original hardware and threw it in. They went so far beyond what many of today’s business’ do. It’s obvious they feel the same way about early Porsche cars as we do!

Here Dave is removing the air cleaners off of his old carbs.

Once the air cleaners are removed we loosen the nuts on the “banjo” fittings for the fuel inlets. I place rags underneath them as to no drip fuel all over the engine compartment. Ethanol will tank paint off!

Now we prime the new carbs with about 2.5 ounces of fuel

WIth the carbs both primed we mount them up, hook up our fuel lines and prepare for first start-up!

The engine runs beautifully. This is a dramatic change from what was happening before. We’ll have more feedback to come. Thanks 356 Carburetor Rescue!

    Thanks for the nice words about our work! Dave was/ is a pleasure to work with and are glad your experience with us was a good one. For any 912′er reading this article, they are going to find these carbs lookng a bit strange. How do split shaft carburetors get that solid shaft accelerator pump arm? These are our “crossbreeds”. Split shaft to Solid conversion. What we like to think is the best of both worlds, and obviously, our clients agree!!

    Everyone,
    I am so over the moon with my new best friends at 356 Carb Rescue it would be easy to think that I’m on their payroll,,, but that just ain’t the case! I would do this all over again, only quicker, had I known the results would be so profound.
    The “new” carbs & the people who build them are both The Real Deal,,,, if you are in the market for the Correct replacement carbs (the ones that Porsche intended) do yourself a big favor, quite wasting your time & connect with Candace, Jim & John at the “Rescue” and start grinning so much that people will wonder what you are up to.

    I just recently discovered that my carbs (solex p-II40s) were running the engine to lean. Now i am stuck with a valve job plus reshafting the solexes. Should have done it in the first place. now i know. Hope to get carbs back fast!!!
