Five for under $5K

Posted on 09 July 2009 by Chris

What vintage motorcar can you get for under $5,000? I’ve set out to find some deals that may surprise you. There are still plenty of fun, reliable and appreciating classic’s to be found. Here’s what I came up with.

  1. The Porsche 914. A mid-engined, 2 seater produced from 1969-1976. This car is a BLAST to drive, reliable and grabs a ton of attention. You probably won’t be buying the more rare 914-6 (6 cylinder engine) for under $5k but if you do find one for that price, Grab it. These are appreciating in value and a super car to own and enjoy.

  2. The Volvo 1800S. An inline 4 cylinder, 100hp, front-engined 2+2 style touring coupe. This car has Italian styling cues and is a fun little cruiser as well. Prices are going up on these but they can still be found for under $5k. This car holds a world record for mileage by a proud owner in New England. His 1800S is pushing over 2.7 Million miles and counting!
  3. The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. You’ll enjoy opening the garage door to this little beauty anytime. Simple to work on and easy, aircooled VW reliability. The Karmann Ghia was an icon of Italian/German design. Karmann Ghia’s are powered by the rear engined, VW flat 4 power plant and were available in 4 speed manual or “Auto-Stick” transmissions.
  4. Austin Healey Sprite. The 4 Cylinder Sprite is a fun topless 2 seater. Earlier versions were referred to as a Bug-Eye or Frog-Eye and becoming more difficult to find. However, the later style pictured here are still readily available in nice condition for under $5k.
  5. Alfa Romeo Spider. Alfa’s nearly 30 year run of this car was no fluke. It’s still eye catching by today’s standards and a great joy to drive. The Alfa Romeo Club has some of the most dedicated enthusiasts and are a blast to get together with. Find a nice one for under $5k and you’ll be loving life, Italian Style!

Now that we’ve hit our 5 for under $5k I’ve realized there are alot more cars out there I could have written about for under $5,000! But that would take away from my catchy “Five for under $5k” title. So we’ll end it here.
