So, where were you when you heard the news? We were informed via an email on Thursday, just 3 days before the scheduled event, that the Concours was being moved to Saturday due to Sunday’s miserable rain forecast. We immediately texted the news to friends who were planning to attend, and got a heads up from others. We flashed back to our very first Amelia Concours in 2003 – the year that it rained. That Sunday morning was an incredible scramble to find covered space so the show could go on.
With over a decade of contingency planning, the Concours team did an excellent job of making sure the show would go on. Saturday’s original plan was tweaked somewhat, and Sunday’s activities were rescheduled to Saturday. It was amazing how well everything turned out!
We arrived at the Ritz on Friday afternoon, and looked at the RM / Sotheby’s Auction Cars, the Silent Auction.
RM Auction had an wide assortment of cars, ranging from a 1937 Bugatti Type 57S, 2012 Bugatti Veyron, 1995 Ferrari F50, 2011 Porsche GT3 RS 4.0, and an Atlas Babycar 2S.
Comedian and car collector, Adam Carolla, was the perfect moderator for the “Japanese Racing – The Men Behind the Victories” seminar. Adam’s unscripted humor kept everyone laughing, and his knowledge of these cars and drivers enabled us to hear amazing racing stories from panelists Peter Brock, Sam Posey, John Morton, Chip Robinson, and Tommy Kendall.
Suddenly it was Saturday. In addition to gorgeous weather, the schedule meant we didn’t yet lose that hour of sleep with the “spring forward” change to daylight savings time. Concours Founder and Chairman Bill Warner assembled fabulous car classes, blending a vast array of automotive design, history, and beauty. After 15 years under our belts, we still get overwhelmed! To name a few of the 40 classes, how about BMW 501-507, Cars of Al Unser Sr., Jaguar D-Type, Japanese Production Racing, Mercedes-Benz (Gull Wings), Motor Scooters, Movie Cars, Porsche (4-Cam Racing), and Streamliners to blow you away?
The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is the ultimate gathering of automotive enthusiasts. Don’t miss it next year.
