The Joys, Pops, Bangs and Booms of Weber Carburetors

Posted on 17 July 2008 by Chris

So I’ve got three vehicles with dual carbs. My 68-912 has Dual Webers, my 69-912 has the same and my 74 VW Campmobile has Dual Solex’s. I’ve been around carbs since I was 8 years old but I’ve never tuned them. My fondest memory, a single carb on our Scorpion Snowmobile. My brother would make me put my brand new gloves over the carb so he could load it up with fuel and try to fire it up in the morning for school. And that’s it. I really don’t know much else about carbs until recently.

I found out in my VW that if I’m travelling through South Atlanta (the not so safe areas) and I feel threatened I can simple decelerate from around 3500 RPM and create the sound of a 45 Handgun. Usually people stay away.

My 68-912 doesn’t bang so much, just merely pops in early acceleration and slightly on deceleration. Here’s what I recently read about this on the 912 forum.

”Where do “Bang and Pop” come from?
We all know that engine will “big Bang” if the mixture too rich, and “small Pop” if it’s lean. “Bang” is the result of raw fuel combustion or explosion in the exhaust system, but where does the characteristic “pop” noise come from, and what really generate the “pop” sound? I can’t imagine how a lean fuel mixture can ignite and “pop”.
.”

“I don’t like the rich fuel smell during idling, and so I re-adjusted the mixture screws 1/8 to 1/4 a turn leaner. The exhaust smells cleaner, but the engine will pop a little during a mild decelerating”

My 912 probably needs the carbs cleaned. I’ve been studying and learning as much as I can before I do this. I’m somewhat afraid but really, what’s there to be afraid of? A retired Porsche mechanic who is in his 70′s recently told me “You can’t really hurt it by working on it. You can do it yourself, learn about it, make mistakes and fix them. Or, in this town you can pay a ton of money for somebody else to make mistakes and then you fix them.”   Pay indeed. I’ve paid other guys so much money to do things the wrong way it’s pathetic. So, I’ve got to fix my carbs. I’ll document it as I go so hopefully it will help others out.
