2008 Hilton Head Island Auction & Jamboree Car Show

Posted on 02 November 2008 by Chris

Every so-often I get the chance to bring somebody along to show’s and I had the pleasure of bringing Dave Mcinerny to Hilton Head. Dave is a fellow Porsche enthusiast and 912 Driver. He is knowledgable in classic American and European cars. We both own 68′ 912′s. Dave and I have been sending emails all week long about our plan to get up to the Hilton Head Show. What to Drive, when to leave, splitting gas and food money, etc… So we finally decided on driving Dave’s 1968 Porsche 912 and leaving at a pleasant 5 am on Saturday morning! Our timing couldn’t have been better. Thanks to Dave for toting camera’s and backpacks around for me all day! We cruised up 95 northbound we finally reaching the Hilton Head Exit. We pulled off at Joker Joes Truck Stop which has excellent fuel quality (I know, I cleaned their tanks!). You know you’re going the right way when you see a tractor-trailer pulling a Rothmans rally car and a Carrera RS! Dave’s 912 is here proudly showing off his license plate next to new friends.

The owner of the Rothmans Car and the RS was leading the way in his Lamborghini Jarama. He gave us a couple of photo opp’s

We arrived at the event at the perfect time. We received a warm welcome from the friendly volunteers and parking was convenient to the show activities. You couldn’t ask for a better setup. The parking lot itself was like a classic car show. Most of which were for sale.

Like this classic Austin Healey just steps away from our parking spot.

While viewing the Healey we heard the roaring engine of a vintage Lola Race Car

Next up we entered a gated area which was themed with commercial and very very early iron.
Here is an antique milk truck.

Next we entered a Vintage Race Area

Every line on the car had something to tell you. I think this is one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen.

The only difference between this car and Harley Earls original was the number of Chrome Deco Strips Down the Side. Harley Earls Original had 9 and as you can see here the builder chose to use 8 because as he stated “I like the spacing better”.

By the front you can almost see where the Murray Sad Face Peddle Cars received some design cues?

The next area we entered the car club jamboree. Different clubs were represented by owners showing off their personal pride and joy.

The Ferrari’s both old and new.

The Porsche Club

One of the best Porsche Cars there was this 914-6. I would have loved to taken this home!

This Austin Healey was one of my top choices.

The BMW owners were showing rare and beautiful early cars.

The Underside of this 2002 Touring was as clean as the top!

Now onto the Auction
Outside of the tent you can here the jibbering auctioneer fighting for every penny he can. Crowds gathered at the doors trying to see what the classic cars were going for. Meanwhile Dave and I scoped out each of the cars going to auction. Most were in very nice condition but I was surprised to find a few cars that you would think any restorer would pay very close attention to basic details. Unfortunately, those cars seemed to be “Prettied” up for the auction.

Here are shots of the nice ones.
First off a beautiful Aston Martin

Citroen

MG Roadster

This car has seen the world

Ferrari Dino 246

Dave gives this Austin Healey’s badges a close inspection

Volkswagen Split Window Bus

And the lady of the show. This Alfa Romeo was incredible. Every angle on this car was a masterpiece and a joy to look at. The Italians win the award for styling.

Caddy Fins

The Verdict: Definitely Going Back Next Year. Definitely Bringing More Lenses. And Definitely Going To Be Fun.

Thanks again to The Hilton Head Concours Volunteers, car owners and all who were involved in making this such a great, educating and historic event.

    Chris:

Thanks for sharing all the great photos. Dad (Dave) told me all about the great time you spent together at this event. We’re really looking forward to next weekend at Roar & Soar. I’m hoping we can capture that event as wonderfully as you represented H.H.

    Cheers!

  3. Dave McInerney Says:

As we all know, for us anyway, Roar & Soar had to be aborted due to Gabe being a bit under the weather, Carbs and timing issues.
Oh well, there will be another edition of this event, and many others in ’09.

  4. John Snell Says:

Wowza. Such a diverse variety of cars. I’ll tell ya, that’s not what Minnesnowda looks like in November. Thanks for sharing the fun.
