Chris Runge has spent the majority of his life working on, collecting and toying with vintage cars. The majority of those cars have been air-cooled Porsche and Volkswagen. In 2011 , with a desire for the “unobtanium” car… Chris took it upon himself to build his own Aluminum Bodied Sports Racer.
Chris’ first one-off design was dubbed the “Frankfurt Flyer” due to it’s inspiration from the C. H. Weidenhausen built cars for Walter Glockler in Frankfurt, Germany Shortly after WWII. Chris has a passion for vintage Aircraft and the post-war racers of Germany. The Frankfurt Flyer combined both the Aircraft and Racer design cues. Most of his designs involve some level of Aircraft influence from rivetry to cockpit canopy designs, etc.
Chris’s shop is located in Alexandria, MN. His shop is simple, typically only he is present, quietly wheeling out panels on the English Wheel. Often times, hammering is done over a shot bag or dished out maple tree stump he harvested from his wooded property. Most new designs are shaped over wooden bucks and then fitted to the automobile body or chassis.
Chris’s business, C. L. Runge Karosserie Design LLC offers traditional coachwork for vintage race and road cars such as Ferrari, Porsche, H-Mods, Specials, Jaguar, Aston Martin and the like. Chris also offers one-off design and coachwork for customers who would like to create their own unique automobile. In addition to custom coachwork, Chris offers his own designs such as the Frankfurt Flyer available in Coupe or Spyder styling, in limited numbers. He also has several other automobile designs drawn up that will be released over the next 20 years, also in limited numbers.
