He should know, he owned a Honda dealership on the West Coast from 1968-1976. He still has several 0 mileage bikes stashed away in his garage, but more on that in the Spring of 2012.

Shown here is the TMJ project 1974 Honda CB750 Four. She’s coming along nicely. This is a sneak peak at the bike while we finish editing the video set to release just before Christmas. Enjoy!

I just can’t get enough of this 1926 Baby Gar known as “Bolo Babe”. As shown in Alexandria, MN summer of 2011, Bolo Babe has quite a remarkable history. Making her way from the lakes of Up-State New York to central Minnesota over 50 years ago, she has always been cherished by her caretakers.

What I found fascinating about the Gar Wood boats is that Garfield Wood himself grew up only 15 miles from our farm in Minnesota. The story goes that on Lake Osakis, Garfield known as “Gar” as a boy would help his father ferry everything from covered wagons to cattle and other goods across Lake Osakis. With a love for speed Gar began building his own small single man boats to zoom over the blue Minnesota waters. His passion for speed was a lifelong affair. Gar was very clever and a smart businessman as he grew into his twenty’s. He designed crane like devices for lifting heavy items off of the boats and loading trucks with them. He soon implemented the boom lifts onto the back of trucks and relocated his operations to Detroit, where the trucks where being built.

He built an empire with his business and always had boat building in his sights. The “Upper Brass” of the 1920′s heard of his impressive boats and approached him to build a Sports Car for the water. The “Baby Gar” was born… And Bolo Babe was delivered to her owners in New York.

Summer of 2011 was a special one for her. Bolo made her way back to the waters of Lake Champlain where over 50 years ago, she was fitted with an 800HP powerplant and beat everything on the water! Here are a few more pictures we captured before her departure out East.

If you happen to be in the Minneapolis area during the first Saturday of the summer months, you’ve gotta make it over to AutoMotorPlex. I can’t think of a better place to host a Cars and Coffee event and by the array of cars and bikes that showed up last weekend I think hundreds of enthusiasts agree!

AutoMotorPlex are private garages located in Chanhassen, MN. The garages look like a nicely designed storage complex from the outside but you know what they say “It’s whats on the inside that counts”. The garages vary in size and design but every one seems to have something special. Along with the garage owners opening their doors for all to view, hundreds of cars show up and line the lots making it a really great venue. Check out our photo’s below and share your thoughts!

This years Wheels of Italy show was nothing short of impressive. Personally, when I think of tracking down rare and exotic Italian cars, both old and new, then assembling them to show in Minnesota, it seems like quite the challenge. Year after year that proves to be far from true for WOI founder, Dan Schaefer and his crew.

Wheels of Italy is in its 9th year and growing rapidly. As you can see the display ranges from rare early Ferrari’s to the new Fiat’s just recently brought stateside and just about everything you can imagine in between.

The Motorbikes were pouring in all morning long. By mid-day dozens of Italian machines lined the parking lot with crowds gathering to view.

This JAWA bike had a ton of character. I liked the fact that the helmet, gloves and jacket worn by the owner were almost as old as the bike…

The WOI show is revolving throughout the day as cars are allowed to come and go. This makes it nice for owners as well who may not be fond of sitting around for a good part of their weekend!

Though there is no judging and the atmosphere is very casual and laid back, certain cars attract a crowd. This 1972 Ferrari Daytona was driven 5 hours from Iowa, where it has been since new. The car was beautiful and proved to be one of the show stoppers. The story behind this car is almost as remarkable as the car itself. The Motoring Journal will be doing a full feature in the coming months so check back often.

The stickers in the rear window represent the countries the car has visited with its first owner while taking many trips, with his Ferrari to Europe.

World Ferrari displayed more early cars that have become very collectible and rather lofty in value over the past decade. A California Spyder brought out the Ferris Bueller fans. Women looked hypnotized flocking toward the car…

One of my all time favorites the 250SWB. Some of you may have seen this car in past pictures with a dog in the front seat and Christmas tree on the roof. That makes some collectors stomach turn but the owners here love their cars and drive them!

Another car you don’t see everyday is this little 1960 Vespa 400. With the original patina, pullback soft top and microcar size the car was quite the charmer.

I was surprised to see so many Testarossa’s in one place. I would estimate there were roughly 20 in attendance throughout the day.

The Alfa’s were out in full force as well. This GTV, although the brightwork needed just a little polishing, had gorgeous paint and interior. The owner obviously had a labor of love with it.

A number of Pantera’s showed as well. Many modified and a few survivors as well.

The WOI team has big plans for next years 10th Anniversary. I know I’ll be there! To see the full photo album find us on Facebook here.
